Apparently he was brought from France to execute Guy Fawkes although that failed due to Fawkes falling and breaking his neck.Kevan Derrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14464040167142070368noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2629301231907528990.post-22991167493316212802011-12-28T19:43:18.154+00:002011-12-28T19:43:18.154+00:00OK so what is the origin of the term 'noodle&#...OK so what is the origin of the term 'noodle'? His invention had a post with a spar hinged at the bottom. The top end of the spar was held in place by a rope running through a pulley on the top of the post, so you could hoist a malefactor off the ground quickly and easily.
Dockers using derricks to unload ships would bring the spar to the centre of the hold by hanging a weight on the hook at the end of the rope - which was called a 'deadman' (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/gansg/9-loads/deadman.jpg).Chris Partridgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14883064324795042491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2629301231907528990.post-69587986081617009902011-12-27T17:34:52.602+00:002011-12-27T17:34:52.602+00:00Err...sorry to be a pedant, but Derrick didn't...Err...sorry to be a pedant, but Derrick didn't use his derrick to execute the Earl of Essex. An a noble and a traitor, Essex had the right to have his head chopped off, and Derrick made a complete hash of the job. It took him three strikes before he was able to wave the head about to a great cry of 'God Save the Queen'.
Dr Guilloutin's machine was designed to avoid this sort of messy and, frankly, barbaric spectacle.Chris Partridgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14883064324795042491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2629301231907528990.post-47724467120000974652010-10-01T20:53:47.435+01:002010-10-01T20:53:47.435+01:00I heard about a guillotine operator who would do h...I heard about a guillotine operator who would do his job and then rush off and put on some different clothes.
