English Verse, Lesson 1: Iambic Pentameters

Having nothing to do, I've done a video tutorial on how to write iambic pentameters.

Incidentally, I know my delivery is terrible. There's a reason I'm a writer and not a TV presenter.

  1. For my money, Mark, your delivery is just fine. Plain, straightforward, no histrionics or handwaving or silly mannerisms.

Thanks for the entertaining and instructive video.

  2. Oh Inky Fool you've got it right again, From English verse you've taken all the strain.

  3. Thank you for taking the time to make this. Encouraged me to give it a go:

Call now this day a long hard fight
Lay down to rest, Surrendered Light

I’m not sure I got it right?

    1. That's an absolutely perfect iambic tetrameter, which is great. Pentameter is ten syllables with five stresses. Yours is eight syllables with four. You've certainly got the principle, though.

    2. I may have found a new hobby here. Thanks for the feedback and clarification.

Night throw shadows over sleepless eye now
For morning comes too swift with beams that blind

Looking forward to wrangling with words as I progress through your videos. I just picked your book Elements of Eloquence for a seminar. Thanks for putting pen to paper!
