Positive book review. / Am I ancient? Sometimes I wonder why critics pick certain expressions and call them "ancient" without knowing that they were still in use only about 60 years ago such as "knocker-up" - when is a word of ancient use? In our small and very rural village, the town-crier also fulfilled the duty of waking people by beating against the shutters with a long wooden stick. The custom died out after the town-crier did not find a successor.
